More than 1 billion people (a sixth of the world's population) lives on less than $1 a day. The global level of poverty is $2 per day.

- The United National Millennium Declaration was adopted by 189 countries in September 2000: "We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than one billion of them are currently subjected." Following the Declaration, The Millenium Project developed eight specific Millennium Development Goals."
- Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, who directed The Millennium Project as special advisor to former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said, "We can be the generation that ends extreme poverty."
- ONE is "a grassroots campaign and advocacy organization backed by more than 2 million people who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. Cofounded by Bono and other campaigners, ONE is nonpartisan and works closely with African policy makers and activists."
